In 2006, Outerspace developed a concept Master Plan through a planned partnership consultation approach, managed by Helen Smith Consulting.  Among the elements proposed were: improvements to Brown Hill Creek, a children’s playground, sports fields, dog-off-leash areas, picnic & BBQ facilities, and a pedestrian path network.

Outerspace were then engaged by the City of Unley to complete the design development and documentation for the park.  The brief asked for a playspace that integrated with the natural feel of the park, and was inclusive to all ages and types of play.  Intensive community consultation developed the theme and design ideas.

The ‘backyard creek’ theme was inspired by the idea of children playing in nearby Brown Hill Creek, and referenced the park’s history as the backyard and play area for the Goodwood Orphanage.  Play elements, artwork and sculptures were developed and inspired by exploring a natural theme that incorporated the ideas of ‘nature’, ‘creek line’, ‘history’ and ‘traditional play’.

Native plants are used in both natural and formal settings, to improve biodiversity and attract birds and native insects.
