Working to blend in with the surroundings is often a primary design objective, while protecting designs against the elements means thinking deeply about enhanced functionality. Set against an exposed coastal environment and needing to maintain a secure perimeter, the Henley Beach Police Station design incorporated resilient, low maintenance solutions to some of nature’s challenges.
The dual role of protection and aesthetics, meant that plant and material choice would need to be carefully considered. To maintain their lush look, plants would need to thrive in less favourable conditions and in some cases create natural impediments to perimeter breaches around the station. Sustainable materials such as recycled wharf timber, limestone boulders and gravels around significant trees all present contrasting and interesting textures. The project goals were achieved and with Outerspace preparing the landscape concept plans, documentation and provided contract administration during construction the client was very pleased with the results.
