Balancing traffic flow with pedestrian safety and the civic good makes for a complex brief. To accommodate growth and future artistic and functional adornments, the Mt Barker Plaza was developed to alleviate pedestrian safety concerns at the intersection of two streets. Working closely with council in the first place, construction surveillance was undertaken to scope these issues.
Once a suitable remedy had been formulated to address safety, the focus turned to capturing and enhancing the character of the surroundings and ensuring that the local flavour was maintained, if not improved. In keeping with the Outerspace mandate to use natural, local or recycled materials and resources where possible, talented creatives contributed screens, arbours and custom-designed seating walls to enhance the character of the surroundings juxtaposed against the ribbed, steel canopy of the plaza. A vibrant space now lays at the heart of the town centre and elected members and the local community are very pleased with the concept that became a reality.
